  • I Am Betty

Book & additional lyrics by Cristina Luzárraga

    Music & lyrics Denise Prosek

This new musical, featuring a diverse all-female cast, explores the ever-changing roles of women over the last century through the lens of Betty Crocker, America’s First Lady of Food. “Born” in 1921 to the company that would become General Mills, Betty was a marketing invention––not a real person––but she came to represent far more than just flour. In 1945, Fortune Magazine named Betty Crocker the 2nd most popular woman in America. Originally depicted as white, blue-eyed, and middle-aged, Betty morphed over time as society grappled with questions of race and gender. At once a radio personality, a letter-writing confidante, a cheerleader, and a scold, Betty taught a nation how to “add an egg" and much, much more.

Named by The Star Tribune as among the Top 10 best theater productions of 2023

  • La Mujer Barbuda

    2 women. 4 breasts. 1 beard.

Maggie is an American airline pilot and new mother. When she tries to pump breast milk in the cockpit, she almost perishes in a plane crash––and that’s not even the worst of it.

Magdalena is a 17th century Italian weaver and new mother. When she suddenly grows a beard and nurses a baby at age fifty-two, she sets off a domestic and civil crisis––and that, too, is not even the worst of it.

La Mujer Barbuda is a dark comedy that explores the intersecting lives of two women, separated by time and space, and united in the struggle to thrive as a mother in a man’s world.

  • Autorefract

    Autorefract

What do President Bashar Al-Assad and Senator Rand Paul have in common? That’s what their wives want to know. Turns out, both men were mild-mannered eye doctors before they followed in their fathers’ footsteps to power––but is that it? Their wives, trapped in an autorefractor (that machine you squint into when you get your eyes checked) are trying to piece together how they wound up where they are and if there’s any escape.

  • Havana Syndrome

What’s that noise? Do you hear that?

So asks Beatriz, a young Cuban-American working at the United States Embassy in Havana. Are these “sonic attacks” real, or is she just losing her mind? And what’s the deal with all those talking gusanos?

Havana Syndrome is a dark comedy that explores the legacy of what it means to norteamericana in these post-thaw times.

Note: In light of recent events, I’m continuing to work on this one. This story just keeps getting more absurd.

  • Critical Distance

[“Daddy, Daddy” by Maurizio Cattelan figures prominently in the play]

Inez is an art history graduate student at Columbia attempting to navigate the highfalutin waters of academia and write her dissertation on outsider art. But her scholarship is turned on its head when she encounters Felicia, a no-nonsense security guard at the Guggenheim who calls it like she sees it. When Inez grants Felicia a platform to voice her unorthodox opinions, she unwittingly creates a competitor in the world of art criticism, and the two women fight it out for the sake of relative fame and fortune.

The play examines the intersection of art and class, and the extent to which art is subjectively defined.
